ESR2 - The reactive transport of REE in natural porous media: experimental study and modelling

ESR 2 - Muqeet Iqbal

The Early Stage Reasercher (ESR) for this research topic is Muhammad Muqeet Iqbal.

I am a hydrogeologist with a Master degree in Groundwater and Global Change - Impacts and Adaptation from the Technical University of Dresden, UNESCO IHE Delft and  Instituto Superior Técnico.

My MSc thesis was on the denitrification potential of Managed Aquifer Recharge Systems. During my master studies, I gained knowledge of emerging pollutants and their biogeochemistry which inspired me to develop my career in research on a similar topic.

Within the PANORAMA project, I am focusing on the reactive transport of Rare Earth Elements in natural porous media.

This Early Stage Researcher will be hosted in Université Rennes 1 and supervised by Rémi Marsac and Khalil Hanna.

This topic of research focuses on describing and model the reactive REE transport in natural porous media. The influence of key parameters (pH, Eh, ionic strength, and presence of naturally occurring ions) will also be investigated.

Three secondments are planned:

  • Ecole Nationale Supérieure Chimie de Rennes (two months and one month): transfer under flow condition: experiment/modelling;
  • Cordouan Technologies (three months): colloids physical in situ characterization in porous media;
  • Amphos21 (three months): transport modelling.
